Two Demonstrations in
April, 2009
Apart from logistics and supply chain management
applications, many innovative
RFID applications have been gaining recognition in the
recent years. We will introduce two popular RFID solutions, jewellery and sushi
RFID solutions, in this article. If you want to take a closer
look on the real demo to see how the solution operates, you
could go to the RFID Centre located in Hong Kong Science
Park.
Jewellery Solution
Currently, most of the jewelers track their inventory with a
manual process which is very time consuming, error-prone and
requires human-handling of each jewelry item. With RFID, an
entire case of jewellery items could be read in a matter of
few seconds
with no need for individual scanning. This RFID jewelry system has
already gained wide acceptance
by local jewelers and manufacturers. RFID inlays could be hid, thus not impacting the
appearnace of the
high-end jewellery tags. The frequency used for such
application is
High Frequency (HF).
Besides, High Frequency jewellery tags with a thickness of
0.6mm can shorten the time of scanning individual items
and increase staff productivity by ten to fifteen times.
It is easier and more secured for jewelry inventory
management. This system could help speed up stock taking and
check in/out of items. The jewellery tag could store
confidential
information such as prices. Quotation time and process could
be smoothened.

Sushi Freshness
From the customer's perspective, food freshness is the
highest concern in raw food, especially sushi. Our RFID
system can ensure food freshness and Sushi Bars are one
of the example. By placing a RFID tag at the bottom of the
sushi plate, "overtime" sushi would be
identified and taken out
automatically from the conveyor belt to keep
all sushi in circuit fresh. With RFID tagged sushi
plates, people
can access product information
such as the place of origin, the supplier and
manufacture date
using RFID readers . Also, hygiene problems could be
avoided
through better quality control using also the RFID tag
and a reader.
Straight from the
the sushi bar, waiters could sum up the patron's
bills immediately by reading all the sushi dishes via a RFID
reader which saves time and avoids making calculation
mistakes. Also, the restaurant outlet could obtain valuable
marketing data like which dishes are most popular, the bar
is busiest at
what time of the day, how long sushi stayed on the conveyor belt.
At the back end, RFID brings better inventory
management as well. For example, sales and net inventory
data per
day are known. Besides, RFID brings many advantages in food
safety. By using RFID, people could keep track of the raw
materials ensuring hygine of the food supplied and the
freshness of frozen food. In addition, RFID
can be applied in Food Supply Chain Management. Better control over the source, storage, picking,
packaging and logistics could be achieved. With RFID tagged pallets and carton
boxes, the goods in each container is registered and the
goods in transit between suppliers and overseas destinations
could be monitored at all times.
Hong Kong RFID Centre (SCIC)
In fact, our RFID jewelry and sushi solutions were displayed
and introduced in the Hong Kong RFID Centre
established in October 2008 and co-hosted by the
Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR
Government, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks
Corporation (HKSTP) and GS1 Hong Kong. The Hong Kong RFID
Centre is located on the
first floor of Lakeside 1, Hong Kong Science Park (HKSP).The
displays highlights how RFID technology has
contributed to improving modern lifestyles encompassing
logistics and library services etc.
